Will Salaries Paid Through Mobile Money Be Taxed By E-Levy?

By Joseph-Albert Kuuire 1 Min Read

If you’re an employee who gets paid by your company through mobile money, it looks like you might be taxed (again) by the government.

According to a spokesperson at the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), salaries distributed from companies’ bank accounts onto mobile money platforms will attract the 1.5% E-Levy fee.

The spokesperson stated that the current framework created by the law as it stands does not distinguish a corporate mobile money account and an individual mobile money account.

For the banks, the disbursements from corporate accounts were not mentioned so it is clear that that one is exempt. But in the momo, there was no distinction between the corporate momo account and the individual momo account,” he stated.

The GRA stated it had forwarded these concerns to the Ministry of Finance for clarification. The GRA is intending to implement the 1.5% E-Levy tax on May 1.
